According to the legends, the idol worshipped here is more than 5000 years old. But there are no historical records to establish it. In the 14th century Tamil literature 'Kokasandesam', references about a place called Kuruvayur is made....
The major cultural festival conducted every year at Guruvayur is Chembai
Sangeetholsavam. This is to commemorate the great Carnatic musician and
an ardent devotee of Lord Guruvayurappan who used to perform here on the
Ekadasi day every year. This grand cultural event comes in December. Poonthanam
day and Narayaneeyam day are also celebrated here. Kavi sammelanam,
debates literary seminars etc. are the specialties.
