Guruvayur was a Keezhedam (subordinate temple) to Trikkunavay until 1757. They lost the power due to repeated attacks by the Dutch and the Trikkunavay Devaswom got dissolved. Later Guruvayur asserted its independence and started to take in to its fold some small temples, most of them were shrines of the protector deities
of the families which became extinct. Now there are 10 temples under Guruvayur Devaswom in and around Guruvayur.
